Sleven bent down some to accept the kiss on his cheek, stealing his own quick but tender kiss to the corner of her mouth as he slid into the living room and put the pizzas and bags on the table. He heard a childish giggle and his cobalt blue eyes swept the apartment for it’s source. He smiled at the head of curls that was peeking around the corner, practicing the best princess weave he could manage.
Lady’s whole ass was wagging when the little girl ran out of her room. The dog didn’t let Avery hide behind her mom, she followed the child, trying to lick her face. “Laaaaddeeeeee….” Sleven warned the dog, in case Avery got frightened… She was a well trained dog, but sometimes she could get a little excited with new people, and he didn’t want her jumping on the kid. But she didn’t, she only wanted to give the girl a tongue bath. Lady was also healthy. She was wrinkly and clean, her reddish brown and white patched fur was soft and shiny. Though stout, she was muscular and lean. With her pink spiked collar and jutting jowls, she looked like a junkyard movie star dog.
As Jess introduced them and Avery squeaked a hello, his face split into a wide grin, the dimples carved deep into his cheeks. He tried to pretend to be a Gentleman, gently taking her little hand in his big mitt, and he bent to kiss her knuckles. “Hi Avery. I’m Sleven. It’s nice to meet you.”
When the girl went to pet Lady and Jess poked his squirming belly, his belly squeaked and he cradled the bulge like a pregnant belly. “Ugh. I ate too much bacon…. not really. You got me pregnant. Really. It’s a boy,” he grimaced like he was in pain, hissing between his teeth. “Ow. I think my water just broke.” Bent over, he collapsed on the couch, leaning back in the cushions, holding his belly… but he was trying to hide the smile that wanted to spread across his face, and he wasn’t very good at acting. He opened his mouth and let out a wail of pretend pain, doing lamaze breathing (but doing it all wrong)trying to act like the mothers in TV shows he’d seen give birth. He normally didn’t tuck his shirts in, but tonight he had, and he tugged the shirt up, reaching up and pulling out a furry baby….
The little red nose pit bull puppy was about eight weeks old, mostly a faded fawn brown color with some white on his chest and chin. He’d been fitted with a studded (not spiked) black leather collar and a blue bow around his neck. His eyes were a bright pale blue, blinking with surprise and playfulness. Sleven handed Avery the puppy. “Here ya go Peanut.”
He stood up off the couch and bent to whisper to Jess so Avery couldn’t hear it, “Yanno, I’m sorry I didn’t even think of it till I was already on the way over, but I’ll take him if you can’t have dogs here…. or if ya don’t want ‘im. Just tell Avery it’s my dog, so you don’t have to disappoint her.” It sounded stupid when he said it, but it wasn’t until he’d actually handed Avery the puppy that he thought of what a bad surprise gift pets make…. it was a lot of responsibility and expense to own a pet, plus considerations like whether or not the apartment allowed it. He’d only remembered her saying Avery wanted a dog, and that she herself was a pit bull kind of girl. In case Jess couldn’t accept the dog, he didn’t want her to have to break Avery’s heart and tell her that.
"Yer all set up. I got him a bed, a bag of puppy chow, the works, it’s all in the car." His thumb motioned to the door over his shoulder.
Her daughter smiled brightly at Sleven as he kissed her knuckles, burying her face into her mother’s neck before she squirmed from her grasp. Avery giggled loudly, her face scrunched playfully as Lady gave her long slobbery kisses on her face, her small hands rubbing the dog’s soft fur. Jess knew her daughter’s little quirks and she knew that Avery liked Sleven. Well, at least enough to be at ease around him. It probably helped that he had Lady with him.
Jess gave a loud laugh when he told her that she had gotten him pregnant, “Dammit Sleven, I told you to get the morning after pill,” she sighed before glancing at Avery who had her arms thrown around Lady. Her daughter looked like she was going to point at her and make her put a quarter in that blasted swear jar but she looked back at Sleven, suddenly very interested in his squirming belly. A grin spread across her face as he pretended (very poorly) to be in labor. He pulled the bottom of his shirt up revealing a small pit bull puppy. Jess glanced at Avery whose bright eyes were darting back and forth from her mother to Sleven, trying to decide if he had really pulled the puppy from under his shirt.
She watched as Avery beamed up at Sleven with such a bright wide smile that she was sure couldn’t get any wider. She wrapped the puppy up in her arms, holding the squirming animal carefully as she scurried further into the living room where they had more room to play. She hadn’t seen her daughter this ecstatic in a while and it warmed her heart that she could see her daughter so happy. Her eyes flicked back to Sleven as he stood back up, bending over to whisper to her.
“Oh, no no, don’t worry about it at all,” Jess shook her head, her eyes furrowed slightly as she gave him a reassuring smile, resting her hand on his arm, “I’ll just have to call the landlord tomorrow and tell him that we have a new addition to the family.” She glanced over to her daughter rolling on the floor, squealing with laughter as she played with both Lady and the new puppy, “I mean I know I’ll be the one taking him out at 4 am in the cold to pee but it will definitely be worth it.” She looked back at her daughter, “Avery what do you say to Sleven?” She whipped her head around to call a giggly “Thank you!” over her shoulder.
“Really, thank you so much. He’s perfect and I haven’t seen her this happy in a…long while.” She admitted quietly. Jess’ stomach growled loudly as she finally caught a whiff of the pizza, “Mmm,” she hummed, leaning to the side to press her body against his, smiling up at him, “how ‘bout we get the puppies stuff and then pig out while watching movies?” she smirked, “And I know you said Avery can choose but honestly, I know my daughter and she’ll pick Beauty and the Beast again even though we’ve already watched it four times today.” She laughed softly, “Since you’re the guest, you get first choice of movies.”
